As a traditional cloth, Kente is for occasional use by royals and the well-to-do. Kente originated from Bonwire in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Bonwire and its neighboring towns and villages continue to be the hub of weaving or the manufacture of Kente.

The use of Kente cloth has become widespread for most occasions. Due to the popularity of Kente cloth, and the innovative spirit among the producers of the cloth, different patterns keep emerging all the time. This often makes it difficult to select from among the different colors and designs. Kente fabric can be worn as a wrapping cloth by men. It is used to make kaba and slit for women. It is also used to make dress for women, shirt for men, artifacts, and academic stoles used at graduation ceremonies. Today, Kente is not produced in Ghana, but also in Togo, and Ivory Coast.
